This is the first blog post that I have written in FOREVER that will not include a photo. And that is because I feel very passionately about this. Instead of just posting a link, I want to copy and paste this amazing photographer's blog post. Nikki MayDay Photography wrote a very well written blog post about the misconception of photographers in this day and age. So please take a read and enjoy!

Earlier today my friend and fellow photographer posted a link to a craigslist ad from a woman in Seattle looking for a wedding photographer.

The woman was upset because she thought that $3000 for a wedding photographer was “wack” because all we do “is hang out at a wedding taking tons of photos and editing them” and that we are “making so much money its crazy.”

I first read this post earlier today while I was running errands and my head almost EXPLODED. I immediately started drafting a horribly mean and punishing response in my head, BUT by the time I got home, I realized that this is probably a common misconception and that maybe I should try to EXPLAIN why photographers charge what we / they do for our / their work.

Before I post my response, I want to THANK all of my brides who appreciate my work and think that I am worth the price. This response is not meant to offend anyone. I understand many people are on a budget, especially in this economy and I understand planning a wedding is both expensive and overwhelming. I always try my best to work with my couples and offer customized and discounted packaging options for those who are on a tighter budget.

I just want to state AGAIN, that being a photographer doesn’t mean that we wake up in the morning, photograph a wedding for 8 hours and then go home and our job is done. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to support ourselves as full time photographers don’t just work as photographers. We are also SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS, which ALSO comes with the job of doing all of our own marketing, sales, accounting, scouting, art directing, managing our offices and studios, being our own webmasters, doing our own post production, designing, blogging, being students, being mentors, researching etc. etc. etc.

Sorry for the novel! Here was my response:

Dear Bride,

I am a wedding photographer in the Erie, PA area. Wedding season only
last about 4 months here, so I photograph an average of 20 weddings
per year for an average of $2500 / wedding. (which totals about
$50,000 / year).

- That being said, I am a small business owner, so I pay all of my
taxes, totaling about $15,000 / year which leaves me with a gross
income of around $35,000

- Of that $35,000 I pay $600/month in rent for my small house and
garage which I converted into my studio (which is where I would be
editing your wedding images at) $35,000 – $7,200 = 27,800.
- Then I have my car, which I would use to get me to and from your
wedding, which I pay $400/month for the lease, Plus $200/month in car
insurance = $7,200 = $20,600.
- To get to your (and my other brides) wedding consultation,
second wedding pre-consultation, the wedding itself, and to and from
the printers I need gas money = $840/year = $19,760
- I also have insurance in case you sue me, or if any of your drunk
guests would happen to break any of my equipment = $500 / year. =
$19,260
- You also probably found me through my website, which I pay $30/month
for hosting, and another $30/ month so that you can view your photos
online and share the images with your friends and family = $720 =
$18,540
- Or perhaps you found me through my advertisements in the newspaper
or local bridal magazines, OR a bridal show that you attended that I
paid to have a booth at $18,540 – $1,000 = $17,540
- I also pay for my own Health insurance in case I were to get hurt at
your wedding = $250/month = $14,540
- and I pay for a second shooter for your wedding, so that you can
have more images and different angles, as to make sure you get the best
images possible at your wedding = $200/wedding = $10,540
- I also need to have a new pair of shoes every season because my
shoes get worn out and dirty from season to season = $100/year =
$10,440
- I need high speed internet so I can upload all of your images
online, my home phone for my business and my cell phone so I can
communicate with you = $2,500 / year = $7,940
- Oh yes, and I also pay a lawyer to make sure my contracts are iron
clad and an accountant to make sure that I am paying all of the taxes
I need… = $500/year = $7,440
- Sometimes I attend workshops and seminars to teach me how to
better my business, and make my client happier (that would be you), as
well as keep up on the trends and learn new techniques so that I can
make sure you have the best quality images available.

That would technically leave me with about $7,000 / year to feed
myself, buy groceries, pay for my heat and electricity, cloth myself
etc…. BUT, usually I end up re-investing whatever I have left on
upgrades and new equipment:

During your wedding, I bring my professional equipment that I use so
that I can make sure you have the highest quality images.

- I have 2 Canon 5D Mark II cameras (because you always need a backup
in case of a camera malfunction which would ruin your big days
photographs) which cost $2500 / camera = $5000
-I also have quality lenses which can capture your special moments in
low light situations:
Canon 24-70 f2.8 lens = $1,200
Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens = $1,300
Canon 50mm f1.4 lens = $500
Canon 100mm f2.8 macro = $600
Canon 10-22mm f3.5 wide angle = $800
- and I have speed lights to catch the fun moments at your reception:
- 2 Canon 580EX II = $1,200
- Also multiple battery back ups and memory cards, lens filters, light
stands, umbrellas, light boxes, external battery packs and a bag to
carry everything in. = $1,500
- Because this is equipment, sometimes I need to have it serviced or
cleaned to make sure it is all working properly = $200

After spending 8-10 hours at your wedding, I then come home to my home
office and spend about 20-25 hours editing your images, creating your
album, blogging about your wedding, posting pictures on facebook,
ordering you prints and burning your DVD’s

- I edit your photographs using a 27inch imac computer = $2500
- I edit your photographs on Adobe Lightroom = $200 and Adobe CS5 =
$400 (for the upgrade) and $900 for the new program.
- and I print your DVD’s on a printer which = $300
- Using ink = $200/year
- and I buy the DVD’s and jewel cases your getting printed =$300 / year
-I archive all of your photographs on 2 2TB external hard drives = $500
- And I also back up all of my photographs online so if there was ever
a fire in my office, you would never lose your photographs = $400/year
- I also have office expenses as far as buying paper, staples,
envelopes, packaging, filing cabinets and files, etc. etc. etc.
- I also spend time and money ordering your prints and albums, paying
for shipping, going to the post office etc.

All of that being said, I’m usually in the hole at the end of the
year, and take on many family portraits, senior portraits and corporate
jobs in order to make ends meet.

Photography is my passion and my livlihood, and it is also EXPENSIVE.
Yes, it seems like a lot of money for one day, but one day isn’t all
we spend on your photographs or on our business. You will spend
thousands of dollars on a wedding dress or flowers or a venue or on
catering which you are going to have for only ONE DAY, but your
photographs will be the only thing you have to remember that ONE DAY
for the rest of your lives.

I’m extremely insulted by your craigslist post and hope this sheds a
little light on why we charge $3000 for one day of your memories which
are going to last you forever.

5 years ago today was a very important day. My bestie and I almost died. Literally. We were living in Ecuador at the time, visiting the RAINFOREST and one of our Ecuadorian friends convinced us that tubing down an enraged river right after a rainstorm was totally okay and normal. Thankfully the only injury was that I got kicked in the head by a tall dark haired female.... I won't mention any names. But let's just say thankfully it didn't ruin our blossoming friendship.

Cheers, Nienk. I would have to say that we thought that the tubing river ride was the CRAZIEST ride we had ever been on... Little did we know that the next 5 years would actually be a crazier ride. Loves yew. So glad I had you to experience it all.

Morning Walks

Now that the weather has been absolutely GORG lately, Mona and I have really enjoyed our morning walks. And by enjoy, I really mean she runs around like a wild chicken with her head cut off and I'm trailing behind yelling at her trying to gain some control. Ohhhh, life with a puppy. So entertaining. But the weather has literally been perf lately. Perf for January 25 especially. Currently:::

Anyway, as we were walking along, I'm glad I had my phone on me, because as the sun was peeking over the buildings in my apartment complex, the colors were just fabulous and vibrant. Absolutely a perfect way to start the day (including the warm pot of hazelnut/french vanilla coffee my husband had brewed for me. What a doll).

AND, for some random advice of the day, I HIGHLY recommend everyone going to see Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

Talk about a tear jerker.... But such a good reminder to continue to pray for all those who live their lives today still affected by the terrible disaster of 9/11.

Well the Christmas season is moving along pretty quickly! Here is an amazing window into the outfit we decided on for Mona and our Christmas card... Except this outfit was one size too big. So after trying this one on her and having her absolutely hate me for it, I went back and got the appropriate size.

While Mona DOES do an amazing job at posing for me, there are a few times in our photo shoot where she needs to take a break, sniff the ground, say a prayer that she doesn't lose it on me....

and then goes back to bulging her eyes and pursing her lips at me. Love the little bugger.

So I've been playing Christmas music pretty much 24/7 for the last couple weeks. I'm trying to get into the Christmas spirit!!! Usually Christmas music and Christmas lights will do it for me... But this year I just can't seem to grasp that holiday nostalgia! I don't know why... Maybe because this year we're not getting a Christmas tree... (Because we are flying home for the holidays). Or maybe it's because it's been a steady 75 degrees out. Which DON'T GET ME WRONG... I'm loving it. Where else can you lay by the pool in mid December?! It's pretty amaz. Anywayz, RTS had a Christmas party last week and I got to photograph the families that came. Seeing everyone dressed up in wintery garb and singing Christmas carols, I have to admit, it did inch me a little bit closer to the Christmasy mood.

I think once the plane touches down on the Philadelphia airport, and I walk outside and feel the cold crisp wintery air... (After shedding a few frozen tears because my toes will be instantly frostbitten...) I will start to feel my spirit instantly switch into Christmas Cheer. Can't wait to come home!!!!

It is my awesome friend Rachel's birthday today, and we all celebrated last night with tacos and margaritas. For a festive birthday treat, the Viscomis decided to embark on an adventure that has never before been embarked upon before. We made cake pops, for the first time ever.

And because she shares my affinity for mustaches and lips (who doesn't?!?) we made sure to decorate these little pops with care.

And they were actually delish! While slightly deformed and not very ball-ish, I would definitely say our adventure was a success!

Obviously her only response was a slight head tilt, but I knew that tilt meant that she already knew what the dilemma was... We are just on the same page about everything, ya know???

But just for the sake of making conversation, I continued, "For the annual Viscomi Christmas card, I'm going to need to make you look super special, it is your first Christmas after all. But there's a problem, I have like 30 different things I want to do.... I'm going to need to do a trial run on probably every outfit... Let's hope Daddy doesn't kill me." And from the slight wink of her right eye, I knew she was on board.

Mona lives a really hard life. I mean sleeping, snorting, eating, licking, pooping, peeing, all day long. I mean, it's rough.

And if it isn't bad enough, I make her walk up the stairs on her own... Hopefully one day she'll forgive me.

Calling all brides! Calling all brides... So one of the most fun/spectacular things about planning your wedding is that you get to be creative with like everything!!

A lot of you may not know... But for our first year of marriage Zack was deployed to Iraq. It sucked. The end. So, we got legally married before he left, and while he was gone I planned the BIG/public/amazing wedding to have when he got back. In between these 2 weddings we took a spectacular 4 week honeymoon to Italy, where we traveled all over the country! It was absolutely amazing.

Anwho, because this trip meant so much to both of us, I knew that I wanted to incorporate it into the wedding, and duh I had like 109309380428e0198402w pictures from it, so I at least wanted to use a couple.

Instead of just regular table numbers, I used different cities/towns/provinces where Zack and I visited in Italy. And then as name cards I drew a little Venetian gondola to tie the whole Italy theme in.

OKAY. So why am I calling all brides and blabbing on about my wedding details. WELL, DUH?! Because this is your wedding, this is your time to shine out and exercise every creative muscle in your body!! And if you don't have one? Then exercise your best friend's!!!! And if she doesn't have one? Well, then there's always pinterest. Either way, personalize it!

You want every guest to leave your wedding, shaking their head and say, "Everything about that wedding was special, it was so and " (Insert bride & groom's name here).

I have a great centerpiece idea for those of you who LOVE to travel. I shot a dinner for RTS Orlando the other day and one of the faculty members brought this centerpiece and I almost died. I LOVE IT.

So, I don't know, I guess all I'm saying is take the extra time, make your wedding about you and your newly-to-be husband, and it will be memorable throughout all the ages! :D

It's happened.... It finally has made the switch. The weather is ABSOLUTELY gorg!!! Like, 75, sunny, breezy, beautiful... delicious weather.

We all had a picnic Sunday afternoon and we sat in the pleasant breeze and weren't consumed by sweaty humidity. IT. Was. Ah-mazing.

Mona's been enjoying it too. So much. Her favorite thing is to sit on the porch with me really early in the morning and stare at all the passer-byers, or to sit in the park and smoke a cigar, you know, doggy-type thingz.

I haven't felt very "Bakey" or "Cooky" or "Chefy" lately...

Meaning I haven't really felt like being creative in the kitchen. I think I go through stages where some days I'm totally up for making "BUUUUFFF BOURGUIGNONNN" -- (Beef Bourguignon in Julia Childs' voice... duh), but other days all I need is a hotdog in a bun with some ketchup. Borrrreeeennng. And artery-clogging. I know. Don't judge me.

Where am I going with this ~~rambling~~ post... Great question. I made French Onion Dip... From scratch!! No I did not use the mix. That would not be from scratch. I actually caramelized the onions.. added the spices... and did it all by myfelf. Yes, I said myfelf.

If you would like the recipe you may click here. But I would advise you, this dip good... Like, so good that you MIGHT eat the whole thing in one sitting... by yourself... It's the fabulous-can't stop shoving it in your face-kind of delicious. So.... Good luck... And... Enjoy!

Okay, so just to throw this disclaimer out there... I never ever set these shots up. Mona is just really into burrowing, hiding, and being as mischievous as she possibly can be. I was working on my computer and heard a little snort so I turned around and scanned the entire room looking for. Then I saw one creepy little eyeball googly-eyeing me up from the corner behind the TV.

I had such an amazing opportunity to shoot a wedding this summer all the way up near Scranton, Pennsylvania at Fern Hall Inn. Jenn works with one of MY best friend's Jess. They are both nurses and they both work the night shift. Eeek! I can't imagine.... I would be one cranky poohead all day every day...

Anyways, I was so excited to shoot this wedding. Jenn and Jamey are so much in love and so perfect for one another. You can tell just by the way they look at each other. It's amazing. And I'm so thankful that I got to document their special day :)

And durrrrr - shooting a wedding where your best friends' are there, you gotta pull them aside for a little mini photoshoot. Durr..

Where??? I don't even know... Somewhere close to Milwaukee I think. But it was actually beautiful. Rolling hills, weathered barns, huge skies... It was gorg. Not only was it gorg, but it is where my one of my bestie's Tim got married.

Is there anything better than wedding weekends where your husband, all your best friends and their wives are all put in one location for the sole reason of celebrating?? Nope....

Thankfully since I was in the wedding as a bridesmaid, my awesome husband worked his camera skillz...

pfffftt.. So what if a few tears dropped. After seeing Darnay break down, I totally lost it.

So I have a new obsession and it's yes, it's pumpkin. The more pumpkin I can get my hands on, the better.

Pumpkin Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies,

pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin cream pie,

heck I even made VEGAN pumpkin cookies.

I can't get enough! I really can't. But I don't know why. My obsession with pumpkin right now is clearly scaring everyone in sight....

Who knows, maybe it's because I didn't like pumpkin as a kid so I feel like I have to make up or it. Or maybe it's because Fall doesn't really exist down here so I'm trying to Fall-ify my life. I don't know.

But all I do know is that my new obsession is so bad I'm hoping at midnight my car might magically turn into a pumpkin... I'd be totally fine with that.

Dear Nivea Moisturizing Body Wash,

I thank you for your production of Orange Blossom and Bamboo scented soap. It is absolutely delicious. The bottle says Touch of Happiness, and I'm not really sure body wash can do that, maybe it can, but DO you smell absolutely delightful. You're not the only ones, my Conditioner says "Love & Peace" on it too... if only all the bad people in the world would start using my conditioner and body soap... Maybe everyone would be a little more loving, peaceful and happy. Who knows. It's worth a try. Anyways, thanks again for making me smell like an orange bamboo stick. It's better than smelling like a Sweet Pea or whatever that was....

Few of My Favorite Things

So the Viscomi family has been making a few upgrades.... And for one, we have become a part of the Jeep family!! Super exciting, especially considering that our almost-dead other car didn't have AC... In 100% humidified weather. Ugh. And our new Jeep does!!! Hooray!

The other new fun upgrade, is that Santa granted my wish early this year ;) I have been waiting for, oh about 9 years to own a white phone... And my dreams came true!! Not only do I have a new white Jeep but a new white iPhone!!

Okay so you're probably thinking why is she rambling on about this... Well the reason I am is because I just downloaded an app for blogging, and so that is what I'm doing. I'm blogging from my white phone for the first time ever. I had to test it out, so here's the test. Did it work???

Meet Hugh and Victoria. It is their 1 year anniversary. And Hugh surprised Victoria with a 1 year anniversary photoshoot! Victoria, not knowing she was going to be photographed all evening, looked absolutely adorable. I wish I looked that cute without trying.... :D

Labor Day has become a special weekend for the Viscomis.

September 5, 2010 marked a number of different life changing events. For example, it was the day before my best friend left for Paris for an entire year. It was the last Sunday that I would spend as a Philadelphia residence. It was the day that almost every single friend and family member gathered together to have one rockin' good time.

You know what the great thing about weddings are?? You get to marry the man/woman of your dreams in front of everyone you know and love.

You know what the great thing is about the wedding of a couple that's already officially married??? You get to REmarry the man/woman of your dreams... Butttt, it also becomes a giant party/dance off/love fest where everyone is laughing, crying and having a merry old time.

Every single thing about this day was perfection down to the degree of weather and the warmth of the sun.

Surrounded by our closest friends and family...

The ceremony was filled with laughter and tears.

Our first dance was kinda epic...

It's That Time Again...

Today marks a few important and special things!

First, yesterday was my 300th blog post... Which makes this one my 301st. WOW. I don't even know how that's possible, I can't even think of 300 words off the top of my head, let alone 300 blog posts! I must be one great rambler....

Second, it's September 1st! I love September! It's my favorite month of the year. Although... That favorite month might switch to October due to Floridian weather... But, regardless, I love September! So yay!

I think it's about time for another episode of "Salute and TheBoot". It's been a while since I've done one! So just a refresher for those of you who are clueless and probably think "what is she turning into a pirate??"

Basically... Things that I love, I "Salute!"And things that I'm not particularly fond of... I give TheBoot!

(So for example, I give Wendy's new natural cut French Fries the Salute! Because they're absolutely delicious and covered in sea salt and who doesn't love sea salt??? And for another example, I give Mona not being able to sleep in past 6:30 TheBoot! I mean, Mona, c'mon I love you to death but I really need my beauty sleep...)

Anywho, moving on:

Today's Salute goes to:: Cooler weather! I know... I kind of gave it away up top by announcing the arrival of September... But oh wells. I LOVE FALL. More than any other season. And I am so super excited, because here in Florida I have never experienced such amazing weather during the Fall/Winter/Spring months, and I am beyond excited for this heat to peace out, and cooler breezes to come. Coffee on the porch in 65 degree, sunny weather?? All winter long?? Yes please...

Today's TheBoot goes to:: Shin splints. And yes I've tried everything. Inserts, new shoes, icing, stretching, heating, running backwards, etc, etc. Nothing works. I can't run 400 yards without excruciating pain up and down my shins. And the worst part about it?? Now that the weather is cooling off... I can smell Cross Country in the air, and am just itching to run a few miles. So my shins, today you are getting TheBoot!!

And because NO blog post should be without a photo...

Shooting together is just marvelous.

The cool thing about photography:: The opportunities are endless. People always ask, so what kind of things do you photograph. I never really know how to answer this question because there's not really anything that I wouldn't want to shoot. Ever.

This last year was such an adventure for me. Last winter, RTS Orlando hired me to help them with a few projects they had goin' on. And after months and months of shooting, editing, etc, I am so proud to have many of my photos displayed on the RTS Orlando website, different brochures, promotional videos, pamphlets, etc! Here is one example of the RTS Housing Brochure, sprinkled with different photos I took throughout the year...

And what'do'ya know! My little sister and Mona even made the brochure!

And a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY shout out to my sister, Jen!!! Double deuces is a great year.

An adorable little bakery and bistro located in one of Philadelphia's many different neighborhoods, Chestnut Hill. It has a delicious menu and the bakery is to die for. And the cutest part about it, is that it is located in Robertson's Flowers' Greenhouse!

Food Truck Bonanza!

So recently, all Zack and I have been watching is the food channel, or the food network, and the cooking channel, I don't know, but we've been watching a lot of shows on food. And one of the coolest shows on there is Eat St. Basically this guy travels all around the country and finds the best Food Trucks and features them. I drool every time the show is on, and because of it I've always wanted to try Food Truck Cuisine.

Well, folks, last night my dream came true.

About ten minutes from our house, there was a Food Truck Bazaar!

We went with some friends of ours, and thankfully they had tried some of the food trucks before so they knew exactly which ones to eat from.

It. Was. Delish.

I purchased my meal from Korean BBQ Box. OMG. So good.

It was a great night, and thankfully it had previously rained so it wasn't even that crowded! And hey, I mean.... The Batter Bowl Truck gave us some free AMAZING buttery Peach Cobbler when the night was over.... Free is for me!
